The Languedoc region is littered with Cathar castles and steeped in history, whilst driving through the countryside you can catch glimpses of imposing castles such as Peyrepertuse, Queribus and Puilaurens

Aguilar Cathar Castle   Stunning views from Aguilar Castle  the imposing Queribus castle

During the crusade in the 13th century the Cathars sought refuge in many castles.

In the Treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659 the border between France and Spain was moved south to the Pyrenees so the castles fell into ruin. Only in the 1980's were they made the tourist attractions that they are today, attracting visitors from all over the world.
