Pezenas was famous for it's wool market and trade fairs, since it became part of the Royal Estate in 1261, up until the beginning of the 19th century. There is a great market held here every Saturday, if visiting in July/August get here early in order to park in the free car park.

Although the market is a great reason to visit Pezenas, allow plenty of time to wander the little ancient streets where you will find many craft shops and art galleries. Don't forget to look up, as you will see the funny little faces of the Mascarons looking back at you, and some lovely ironwork. There are many fine mansions here dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. Look at their courtyards. Look at the doorways too, and if doors do it for you Pezenas even has a door museum!

The famous French playwright Moliere came to Pezenas in 1650, where he often performed at the Hotel d'Alfonce, one of the most beautiful buildings in Pezenas.

If after a lot of walking you need a good cup of tea and a sit down, head for the English tea shop on Rue Conti. Here you get a proper pot of tea, along with sandwiches, cakes and even a full English breakfast.

Did you know - Le petit pâté de Pézenas - the little Pezenas pie, or Clive pie as sometimes known, was introduced to Pezenas by Lord Clive in 1768. He was residing in the town with his Indian cooks who gave the recipe to the bakers of Pezenas. A Pezenas pie is made with sweet and spicy minced meat, and looks a bit like a cotton reel. Everyone visiting Pezenas must spend the euro to try this local bite size speciality
